Nina Akopyan, Midwood Development Corp’s Bilingual Housing Counselor, goes beyond the required call of service for her clients – she fights for them in court.
In March 2015, Jane* came to Nina with a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits problem; even after applying three times, she was still not receiving benefits. In June 2015, John* came to Nina with a landlord problem; even though John had receipts from paying rent, his landlord claimed the rent was not received and was threatening eviction.
In both cases, Nina went to court in downtown Brooklyn, and with her help, both Jane and John were able to successfully present their cases to the presiding judge and receive a favorable judgment.
