Councilman Chaim Deutsch continues to address problems of trash, litter, overgrown weeds, water pooling, illegal dumping, and other sanitation issues in the 48th district. The councilman has provided funding for additional resources, assembled volunteers for clean-ups, organized educational outreach in commercial and residential areas, and hosted events to enhance our community to better protect our environment.
Throughout the summer, Councilman Deutsch had several dozen volunteers and interns form a cleanup group operated in partnership with the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), the NYC Parks Department, and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. Working together, they addressed many problem areas. In addition, the team cleaned out corner catch-basins before and after storms and removed trash under train trestles.
Councilman Deutsch, staff members, and summer interns also visited local businesses and spoke with consumers, and distributed educational information about littering, cleanliness, and the importance of environmental awareness. A team of interns also painted fire hydrants to improve appearances overall.
Councilman Deutsch increased DSNY funding to add corner trash can pickups in commercial areas. This extra service helps minimize the typically overfilled baskets that often spill out onto these busy streets. Deutsch also allocated funding for additional street sweeping.
Councilman Deutsch has funded the purchase of several additions for the DSNY fleets. Among them, in Community District 14 — which includes sections of Midwood — has been allocated a new mechanical broom for street cleaning.
“Keeping our neighborhood clean has always been an uphill battle,” said Councilman Deutsch. “There is still plenty of work to be done, and community partnership plays an important role in making lasting improvements. I encourage my constituents to reach out to my office to report locations that may need extra attention.”
Councilman Deutsch continues to host events that encourage recycling and proper disposal of electronics. During the upcoming fall months, he will be sponsoring an e-waste recycling for electronics, a shredding event, and a SAFE disposal event, for items such as leftover paint cans
