New heat laws are now in effect in New York City.

Heat season runs from October 1st to May 31st, and this year there are new regulations governing the temperatures at which building owners are required to provide tenants with heat.

During the day, from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m., landlords are required to keep a minimum temperature of 68 degrees F when the outside temperature is 55 degrees F or below.

At night, from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m., landlords are required to keep a minimum temperature of 62 degrees F at all times. There is no outside minimum temperature requirement.

Tenants without heat should file a complaint through the NYC311 mobile app, by calling 311, or online at nyc.gov.
