New York City real estate development website YIMBY has reported that permits have been filed for the development of an 8-story, 302-unit building on the site of the Shulamith School at 1263 East 14th Street.

According to YIMBY, Hampshire Properties is listed as the developer, and the residential zoning area will measure 277,406 square feet. The property has an alternate address of 1277 Locust Avenue, and the current occupants — the Shulamith School for Girls, a campus of 85,000 square feet — must first be demolished.

We’ll follow-up on what this means for the future of the school, and for the future of the Vitagraph smokestack, which is on the site and seems in further jeopardy by this announcement. Read the YIMBY article here, and click here for information on the Vitagraph smokestack.
